The Listening courses have started again for the semester and first piece up is Beethoven's fifth piano concerto, better known as the Emperor Concerto. This piece replaces Strauss' Ein Heldenleben, which originally was on the agenda. In connection with this course we have put together an exhibition of several of the recordings of this concerto found in our collections.
One of the selected records is a record issued by RCA in 1971, in which Artur Schnabel interprets the concerto with Chicago Symphony Orchestra directed by Frederick Stock. The record was published in the series Camden Classics (Victrola) with record no. CCV 5028. We have selected a short excerpt from this recording to present here, the selection is from the very beginning of the first movement, Allegro.
