Time flies, and now the Christmas season is upon us again. The streets and trees are dressed in Christmas garb with lights and ribbons, the smell of gingerbread and mulled wine is teasing the nostrils, and the Christmas candy that have been in stores since October can now be enjoyed with a good conscience.
True to tradition, Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound serves a 24 course musical meal as an early Christmas present to everyone.
Between Christmas cleaning, Christmas baking, Christmas purchases and the final work efforts before the holidays, it's good to get comfortable in a warm chair and have a moment of peaceful Christmas magic.
As the calendar opens you can experience some of our favorite Christmas hymns performed by the previous century's greatest stars, discover new Christmas favorites among the lesser-known Christmas songs and understand how the Christmas spirit was interpreted by the classical composers.
So sit back, relax and enjoy the sounds of Christmas as it sounded in the last century. Have a peaceful Advent!
The records are professionally cleaned and digitized but we present them in urestored editions, complete with hissing and crackling, perfect for creating the atmosphere of a good old Christmas. The Institute holds a conservation audio file in wave format, but the files that are presented here on the website are mp3 compressions of the original files.
We want to give a big thanks to Dag Trygve Henriksen who helped select this year's Christmas records, and George Brock-Nannestad in Denmark who have been happy to double check our information about where and when the records are recorded or released.
Hvor er lyden? Forstår ikke vitsen med siden uten lyd?
