"O Christmas with your pleasures" - a song for around the Christmas tree.

A feature of a Norwegian Christmas party or gathering is "going round the Christmas tree", in which everyone present, from the oldest to the youngest, forms a big circle (or two concentric circles) around the tree and walks around it whilst singing well-known carols. This song is a firm favourite for such gatherings, not least because the text invites us to do various actions, which adds to the fun.

Aasta Nielsen (1897-1975), who is singing on this record, was better known in her day as an actress, both on stage and on film, where she had leading roles in silent films such as ”Fante-Anne” ("Anne the gypsy") (1920), ”Jomfru Trofast” ("the faithful virgin") (1921) and ”Felix” (1921).

One thing that is fascinating with these old recordings is to hear how the songs were interpreted by the soloist. As usual, the tempo is a bit slower here than we are used to nowadays, but as well as this, Aasta Nielsen has a very personal approach to the rhythm (such as the little pause before the last line in each verse).

Are you going to join us around the tree?
