Advent Calendar 2011

6 December - Silent Night

Sometimes "heavenly peace" can seem hard to find in the modern world and in today's Christmas celebrations. Today, though, we get a solid dose.

Marguerite d'Alvarez

Marguerite d'Alvarez

Marguerite d'Alvarez(Project Gutenberg)

The alto Marguerite d'Alvarez (c.1883- 1953) was born in Liverpool, though her family came originally from Peru. She gave concert performances in London, amongst other places, and began her operatic career in France before travelling to New York, where she sang with Oscar Hammerstein's Manhattan Opera Company, amongst others. Across the years she enjoyed great success at the European opera houses (especially in London) as well as in Chicago and Boston. She also had roles in three films, including a lead role in the film "An Angel Comes to Brooklyn" (1945). In the later part of her life she concentrated on concert work, but also made several recordings including Samson and Dalila. Here we find her in Christmas spirit, with this wonderful recording of ”Silent Night”.

What Marguerite d'Alvarez is singing is not the usual English text by John Freeman Young (below), nor any of the 25 most usual English translations - in fact, we have been unable to trace the translation in any other source. Perhaps it was prepared specially for this recording. Can anyone offer us any information?

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

Silent Night - English translation

I was surprised to read that you are unable to trace the translation of Silent Night that Marguerite d'Alvarez is singing. I grew up singing this version. Possibly it's a Midwestern USA translation?
