Yesterday we listened to a recording of "Jeg er så glad hver julekveld". Today we get another chance to hear the same song - but this time with a different singer.
Our singer today is Bjørn Talén (1890-1945). Talén was a leading operatic tenor between the wars in (amongst other places) Norway, Germany and Italy. He was born in Kristiania (as Oslo was called at that time), where he was also brought up and educated. He had a glittering career, enjoying great acclaim from the public and critics alike. But his life also had other dimensions. He liked the outdoor life and bought a farm in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley in 1938 As a military officer his experience included being head of air defences at Kongsvinger fortress in 1940.
Both the lyrics (by Marie Wexelsen, 1832–1911) and the melody (by Peder Knudsen, 1819–1863) of this, a much-loved Norwegian Christmas song, were written in the same year, 1859.
