Advent Calendar 2015

December 13th - Snow

Today a romance expressing the beauty of the white, pure and quiet snow!

"Snow" is one of the most famous and often performed Norwegian romances. It was Sigurd Lie (1871-1904), who created the work to a poem by the Danish writer Helge Rode. This Romance was written between 1898 and 1899, while Lie was musical director at the "Centraltheatret" in Christiania (Oslo). I think that the words of the poem are very beautiful, and therefore I will share them with you.

It is Gunnar Sandvold, baritone who is singing, captured on a private recording.

Henry Justice Ford: The Snow Queen

Snow

There is nothing in the world as quiet as snow,
Sinking slowly, slowly through the air,
Silencing your steps,
Gently, gently hushing
Voices speaking out too loud.

There is nothing in the world as pure as snow,
swan’s down from heaven’s wings so white.
Upon your hand a snowflake
Is like the dew of tears.
White thoughts swirl in a silent dance.

There is nothing in the world that can soothe like snow.
You listen wordless till the silence sounds.
Oh, what a splendid chord,
The sound of silver bells
Ringing in heart of hearts.
