Advent Calendar 2015

December 19th - Aragonaise

A complete fiasco eventually becomes a great success – you find several incidents like this during the history of music.

Carmen

Carmen

One might think that it is amazing that the premier performance of George Bizet's opera "Carmen" in March 1875 was an absolutely failure! A few months later, in June that year, Bizet died when he was only 36 years old. The day before, he had signed a contract to stage "Carmen" at the Vienna Opera. The Vienna premiere in October became a complete success. Since that very day, "Carmen" has become one of the most beloved spectacles to opera audiences worldwide. There are today so many different versions of "Carmen" such as ballet, orchestral suites, film (Carmen: Carlos Saura, 1983), flamenco and even a Chinese version of Habanera that develop into a mambo! (Grace Chang: In the film “The Wild, wild rose”, 1960)

Today's recording is Arturo Toscanini’s interpretation of Carmen’s "Aragonese". The recording was made in December 1920 when Toscanini was 53 years old. At that occasion, he was on tour in the United States as a conductor of the La Scala Opera Orchestra, Milan. These records are Toscanini’s first recordings and one of the first ever recorded with electrical engineering.
