Teaching and Courses

How to Capture the Sound

The Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound now gives primary school pupils knowledge of the sound history. This is the Institute's contribution to the Project Den kulturelle skolesekken (The Cultural Satchel), whereby all pupils in the Norwegian educational system will get in touch with different cultural manifestations. Initiator of the NIRS contribution is Per Dahl who has compiled a teaching plan giving the young people the ability to look at, listen to and try the old analogue sound equipment. Started in December 2007, the lessons are scheduled throughout the scoool year 2008-2009.

Music Listening Courses

By attending our listening course, it is possible to increase the enjoyment of listening to classical music.

No musical background is required to attend a course. We use music examples from Stavanger Symphony Orchestra's current season programme, but it is possible to attend the courses independently of the concerts. The 6 evening-courses are held in Norwegian only.

The lecturer is Per Dahl, researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound and Associate Professor at the University of Stavanger's Institute of Music and Dance.

Concert Trips

In addition to the listening courses, Rogaland Musikkråd organizes concerts trips to music capitals of Europe, twice a year. Previous destinations: Vienna (picture to the left), Amsterdam, Prag, Rome, Berlin, Budapest, London and Paris. Usually, Per Dahl accompanies the group as musical tour guide. It is possible to participate in the trips without attending the courses, but priority will be given to course attendees.

The courses and trips are a cooperation between the Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound, Rogaland Musikkråd, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and the Institute of Music and Dance at the University of Stavanger.
