Director

Jacqueline von Arb (b.1964) is the Director of the Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound (NIRS), where she has worked since 1989 and the General Manager of MemNor AS, Audio Archiving Services. 

She previously headed and developed the International Chamber Music Festival in Stavanger, Norway, for 2 years (1993-94), with an additional period as Interim Director (1996).

In 2005, Jacqueline von Arb was elected Vice President of the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives, after serving as Assistant Coordinator (2003-06) and Deputee Coordinator (2004) of the IASA Nordic Branch, as well as member of the organizing committee for the joint IAML-IASA Congress in Oslo (2004), the IASA Conference in Mexico (2006) and the IASA Conference in Riga, Latvia (2007). She is coordinating the next IASA conference (2010) in the USA.

In 2007, NIRS is hosted the Norwegian Sound Archive Conference. Jacqueline von Arb continues as chair of the Organizing Committee for the Norwegian Sound Archive Conference 2009 in Trondheim. 

The Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound was also one of 7 partners in the 3-year European project "Memories" (2006-09), which designed an audio semantic indexation system allowing information retrieval for better access to archival sound content. Jacqueline von Arb was the partner representative and lead one of the project's Work Packages. 

Jacqueline von Arb's educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts (French, German, Spanish) from Central University of Iowa, USA, and the University of Vienna, Austria, the equivalent of a Bachelor of Music (Instrumental Pedagogy, specializing in Piano, Aural Training and Music Theory) from the Music Conservatory of Northern Norway, as well as graduate studies in Organizational Theory, Communication, Leadership/Organizational Change, and Pedagogic Leadership at the University of Stavanger, Norway. She continued audiovisual archiving studies online and obtained a Graduate Certificate in Audiovisual Archiving from Charles Sturt University, Australia in 2009.

She grew up in many countries and has thusly amassed fluency in seven languages. Jacqueline von Arb now lives and works in Norway, but has retained her Swiss citizenship. In her spare time, she is an avid gardener, mountaineer, telemark-skier and aikido-practitioner.
